Stuck with your plan? Open enrollment is here. The Sosa Insurance Group, Medicare made simple.

Medicare can be complicated. We make it simple.

Every fall, Medicare opens a window many New Jersey seniors hear about but do not fully understand. That window is the Annual Enrollment Period, often called AEP. This year it opened on October 15 and runs through December 7, 2026. Changes you make during this window generally take effect January 1, 2027.

This article is for education and plan navigation only. It is not personalized advice, and it does not tell you what to enroll in.

What is open right now

During the Annual Enrollment Period, people with Medicare can review their coverage and make certain changes for the coming year. In plain terms, this is the season when you can:

  • Look at how your current coverage is working for you
  • Compare options available through licensed agents who work with plans in your area
  • Request changes that, if you choose to make them, typically take effect January 1

Exact options depend on your situation and on what is offered where you live. A licensed agent completes a Scope of Appointment (SOA) before discussing specific plan details.

What AEP is not

AEP is not a deadline that forces you to enroll today. It is not a government endorsement of any agency. And it is not a reason to rush.

You have until December 7. That is time to learn the basics, gather your questions, and ask for a complimentary plan review when you are ready.

A calm way to prepare

If you live in northern New Jersey, including West Orange, Newark, Jersey City, Montclair, East Orange, Paterson, or Morristown, a simple prep list helps:

  1. Write down what matters to you. Doctors you want to keep seeing. Medications you take. Whether you prefer one card or coverage that works with Original Medicare.
  2. Keep your current cards and plan paperwork handy. You do not need to understand every line. Having the names and numbers ready makes a later conversation clearer.
  3. Read your Annual Notice of Change. Your plan mailed it in September. It lists what changes in January.
  4. Note your preferred language. The Sosa Insurance Group has representatives available in English, Español, Kreyòl Ayisyen, and Português.
  5. Decide how you want to talk. Call, text, or schedule online. An SOA is completed before specific plan details are discussed.
